ATTENTION ALL NEW MILFORD YOUTH in GRADES 4-12
You are invited to design a lamp post banner that will fly on New Milford Green and answer the question:
What does your heart beat for?
Artwork should be about what matters to you most, what you want to protect, celebrate or speak out about.
THINK ABOUT THIS:
Heart beats keep us alive. To say something makes your heart beat is like saying that it’s the beat that gets you going, keeps you moving, gives you joy, pushes you to know more, challenges you to go further or make things better. Without that special beat, your heart may be physically fine, but you might not feel quite as “alive.”
THEN ASK YOURSELF:
WHAT DOES YOUR HEART BEAT FOR?
What do you care about?
What makes you hopeful?
What inspires you?
What concerns you?
What makes you stronger?
What gives you joy?
What makes you think?
What keeps you “alive?”
Is it a place?
Something in nature?
A time?
A possibility?
A problem?
An idea?
An experience?
A hope?
Righting a wrong?

HOW THINGS WORK
A jury of professional artists and educators will select up to 50 artworks to be made into banners. Selections will be based on:
Thoughtful interpretation of the theme
Readability (since banners are viewed from a distance, we are looking for images that are bold and not overly detailed.)
Craftsmanship
Originality
JUDGING: To ensure fairness, judges will not see the name, grade, or school of any participant until after the banner selection is complete. All banner designs will then be reviewed again by grade group only: (grades 4-6; 7-9; and 10-12). One banner design per grade-group will be selected to receive the Heart Beats for Excellence Award, (a gift of $100).
NOTE: Artwork that includes any copyrighted material will not be accepted. For example, if an artwork shows a character, place, or image from a television show, film, video game, or book it will be rejected. All artworks must be original and created entirely by the applicant.
WHAT ELSE YOU NEED TO KNOW
Whether or not your artwork is chosen for one of the banners, you will be notified either way at the end of July.
Artworks chosen will be printed on 18" x 36" vinyl banners and hung along the New Milford Green in late summer of 2021.
Three youth will also be selected by the jury to each receive the Heart Beats for Excellence Award (a gift of $100).
All banners will be up-cycled into tote bags available for sale at a later date.
